Written in clear, accessible English for young readers, this collection was born out of the author's work teaching children in rural Bengal — but it stands on its own as a set of mysteries that trust young readers to think as hard as its young detectives do — and to care about something bigger than the mystery itself.

About the Author

Rajarshi Dasgupta is an officer of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax). Before joining the IRS, he worked as a scientist at the Department of Atomic Energy — a path that took him from decoding the physical world to decoding human systems, first in government, and then, almost by accident, in a classroom.

He works with the Ramakrishna Mission Ashram at Singerkone, developing methods to teach English, critical thinking, and reasoning to Adivasi students in rural Bengal. This book, along with its companion volume on great heroes from across the world, grew directly out of that work — an attempt to use storytelling to teach language, history, and values through fiction children actually want to read.
